Review

I was having a stirring to investigate the vision forming process. I was talking about it at church in elders, and in other places. As is often the case for me, I later go off and try to learn more about what I am feeling drawn to do or work on. This book is my foray into the world of vision. I liked this book a great deal. It is straight forward. You could perhaps use it like a formula, but I doubt it would work well. The very nature of developing and formulating a vision does not fit well with formulas. He does an excellent job telling you where you need to put your work when you pursue a vision process.

An example of a chapter would be one on "Vision Killers". The headings in this chapter include: tradition, fear, stereotypes, complacency, and fatigue. There is a nice discussion with each of these. There is a chapter on how a ministry will benefit from forming a vision, it includes headings for benefits such as: big dreams, continuity, direction and purpose, increased interest and commitment, acceptable change, filter for opportunities, openness, encouragement, confidence, loyalty, efficiency and productivity.  There is a very nice chapter on  "Myths that Mar Vision".

This is a straight forward book. It has many practical ideas and guidance. I do not find it controversial or difficult to comprehend. I would recommend it to anyone trying to pursue a new or expanded vision for any organization, but especially faith based organizations. It is good information for a person to have who is trying to facilitate such a process. There is a nice study guide in the appendices that can be used, also.
