Review

I have been working painting for several years as a form of spiritual expression. I thought this book would pertain to my endeavors. It does pertain to art as it relates to spirituality. I had mixed feelings about the book.

The book is a series of prayer exercises using art as a means to let the unconscious aspects of ourselves bubble up and become evident through the artwork. You could do this as an individual or perhaps as part of a small group who would meet to discuss the art and discoveries made in the process. You could do the work then meet with a spiritual director or analyst and use it as a means to do deeper work.

The book was okay. It uses a sort of formula of sorts for each exercise. For me, it seemed like an odd process in some ways. I will admit I have not tried the process at this point. He begins with simple art projects then gets a little more complex with different media. I did not feel so inclined to make collages as a form of expression, but I would agree this could be a useful form of projection art that might reveal things going on within us unconsciously. There are other projects such as sculpting, painting, etc.

He has a variety of good points to make, but many of them I have long ago discovered. For this reason the book seems a little basic in its content. He generally recommends praying before you work, doing the work, and then reflecting on it. This seems straightforward. He recommends a lot of spontaneity in the process. My process seems to work quite a bit differently than this one. I find the actual process of creating the art to be one big prayer of sorts.

The book is okay, but I was hoping for more some how. It seems basic without much depth.
