Allergy Reactions

Common Symptoms

Itching
Hives
Red rash
Throat swelling
Swollen lips or mouth
Wheezing/ Asthma
Difficulty breathing
Sudden dizzyness and low blood pressure

What to Do

1. If you know what is causing the reaction, remove yourself or the offending substance from your  presence.

2. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in the capsule or liquid form is very helpful for relieving hives and other aspects of an allergic reaction.  It also comes in a topical spray and a cream now.  Pills or liquid should be taken in doses of 25 to 50 milligrams every six hours as needed for hives, itching, or other symptoms.   The pill or liquid forms will most likely make you quite sleepy, so avoid driving, use of power tools or other dangerous pursuits that require full alertness.

3. If you experience dizzyness, mouth swelling, throat swelling, shortness of breath or wheezing, you should contact us immediately, go to the emergency room or call 911 if the situation is becoming severe.  Allergic reactions that are severe can kill you, so make the best choice that seems most appropriate for the severity of the situation.
