Bowel Prep for Sigmoidoscopy
General

Directions

This procedure may be used for other procedures such as x-ray tests, surgery, or other endoscopic studies.

This procedure is going to clean out your lower intestinal tract. Following this procedure carefully will result in your colon being well prepared for whatever test or surgery you may be having.  A good prep will avoid having to repeat your study.  You may respond to laxatives vigorously, so be near toilet facilities as needed.

This prep should be performed 24 prior to your test or procedure.

You should drink plenty of water during the prep, i.e. one 8 oz. glass at each of the times noted below.  You should avoid milk, cream or non-dairy creamer.

  • Breakfast: Clear liquids such as broth, clear fruit juices, gelatin (non-red), soft drinks, plain coffee, herb teas, regular tea.
  • Noon: Continue clear liquids as a breakfast above.
  • 1:00 PM:  Drink one 8 oz. glass of plain water.
  • 2:00 PM:  Drink one 8 oz. glass of plain water.

  • 4:00 PM: Drink one 8 oz. glass of plain water.
  • 5:00 PM: Continue with a clear liquid meal as at breakfast and Noon
  • 5:30 PM:  Slowly add contents of the "Lo So Prep" packet to 8oz. of water in a 16 oz. cup. Stir gently.  After the fizzing stops, stir gently and then drink the entire glass.  A bowel movement will occur in 30 minutes to 6 hours.
  • 6:00 PM:  Drink one 8 oz. glass of plain water.
  • 7:00 PM:  Drink one 8 oz. glass of plain water.
  • 7:30 PM:  Peel the backing off the 4 Bisacodyl tablets, and take all four at once with an 8 oz. glass of water.  Do not chew the tablets.  These tablets are to be taken 2 hours after the "Lo So Prep" packet.  Bisacodyl will produce a bowel movement in about 6-12 hours.
  • 8:00 PM:  Drink one 8 oz. glass of plain water.
  • 9:00  PM:  Drink one 8 oz. glass of plain water.  Do not eat anything after 9:00 PM except for water as desired.
  • Sleep
  • Day of Procedure:  Do not eat or drink anything.  Discuss with me what to do with any medicines or insulin for that day.
  • 2 Hours Before the Procedure: Unwrap the foil off the bisacodyl suppository.  While lying on your side with one thigh raised, insert the suppository into the rectum and gently push it up inside as far a possible.  Retain it there for at least 15 minutes, if possible, before having a bowel movement, which will usually occur in 15-60 minutes.  If you require assistance try to have someone available to help with a bed pan, commode, or other assistance as needed.

Warnings:

Bisacodyl may cause abdominal cramps, discomfort or faintness.
